7 Signs Your Website Needs a Redesign
Your website is often the very first interaction a potential customer has with your business — and it doesn't take long for them to make up their mind. Research shows a website's design shapes roughly 94% of a visitor's first impression, and 38% of visitors will leave a site because of poor design or content. If your website hasn't been touched in a few years, there's a good chance it's quietly turning people away before they even read what you do.
Here are 7 signs it might be time for a redesign — and what to do about each one.
1. It doesn't look right on mobile
Mobile-friendly design now dominates among the majority of top-ranking websites, and most of your visitors are almost certainly browsing on their phone. If your site involves pinching, zooming, or menus that don't open properly on mobile, you're likely losing enquiries before visitors even reach your contact page. A responsive, mobile-first rebuild is one of the fastest ways to recover lost traffic — see our post on essential website features every small business needs for what "mobile-ready" should actually include.
2. It's slow to load
Site speed isn't just a technical detail — it directly affects whether people stay. Over half of visitors will abandon a page that takes more than 3 seconds to load. If your website was built years ago on outdated code, oversized images, or a clunky page builder, speed is often the first thing to suffer. A rebuild on a modern platform like Squarespace, with optimised images and lightweight code, solves this almost immediately.
3. Your branding has moved on, but your website hasn't
If you've rebranded, changed your logo, updated your colours, or simply grown into a more established version of your business, but your website still looks like it did years ago, there's a mismatch that customers notice. A website should reflect where your business is now, not where it started. This is one of the most common reasons clients come to me for a refresh rather than a full rebuild — see what your website says about your brand.
4. You're not getting enquiries from it
A website that looks fine but generates zero enquiries usually has a structural problem, not a cosmetic one — unclear calls-to-action, no obvious next step, or key information (like pricing, services, or a contact form) buried too deep. Improving the user experience of a page can lift conversion rates by up to 400%. If your site gets traffic but no bookings, form fills, or calls, that's the clearest possible sign a redesign is overdue. Our guide on what a landing page actually does for small businesses explains how the right structure fixes this.
5. You're embarrassed to send people to it
If you hesitate before sharing your own website link — on an invoice, in an email signature, or with a new lead, that instinct is worth listening to. Your website should be your best sales tool, not something you're quietly hoping people don't look at too closely.
6. It hasn't been updated in years
Old copyright dates, outdated services, discontinued products, or team members who've long since left the business all signal to visitors (and to Google) that a site isn't actively maintained. Search engines favour sites that are kept current, and customers do too — an out-of-date site raises doubts about whether your business is still active, let alone your website.
7. You built it yourself in a hurry, years ago
Plenty of small businesses launch with a quick DIY site just to have something live, fully intending to revisit it "properly" later. If that was your website's origin story and later never came, it's probably still running on the bare minimum. Our post on DIY builders vs hiring a web designer breaks down when it's worth making that upgrade.
Recognise a few of these?
If two or more of these sound familiar, your website is likely working against you rather than for you. The good news is that a redesign doesn't have to mean starting from zero — often it's a case of rebuilding the structure and design around content and branding you already have.
